Katarina Witt started to ice skate as early as age five. When her talent for skating became more apparent, she received an entry at the Karl-Marx-Stadt school, which focuses on youngsters with athletic talent. In this school, she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt became a star in 1982, after she finished second at the World Championships at Copenhagen. Since then, her elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. Four years later she took home an even tougher competition. Witt actually fell short of the free skating competition, but earned the gold medal based on her performances in the compulsory figures and the short programme. Witt was the first female to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in film acting, then returned for figure skating, competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she didn't get a single medal she enchanted fans despite her seventh place finish. In 1995, Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
